Post 27: Poster Development

Here are some initial sketches, showing the development of my poster.

Below is my first attempt at my film poster. The initial Idea was to have the main character Josh as the main focus of the poster, seeing as he is the most important character in the piece. I have put the title at the bottom of the piece as it meant I was able to make the font white. I have used the same style font as the rest of my group and on my magazine spread, to connect our individual pieces together and give our designs a more professional effect.

The Three Posters below are all similar but I have added in different photos from different elements of the short film. Experimenting with different characters in the posters and seeing what looks effective and what doesn't. I went around asking people of my target audience which poster they preferred, to see which of the three posters they found the most professional and effective.

Overall 6 out of 10 people appreciated poster one with the two police officers standing in the background, behind the character Josh, as it added an intense, dramatic feeling and made people want to go see the film as wanted to know why those specific characters are in the piece. 3/10 chose poster three and 1/10 chose poster two with the teacher in the background. I feel that poster three was most popular as it made people question why is there two police officers, whereas in poster two the image isn't very clear and cannot really tell whats going on which is effective in its own way as doesn't give to much away, but isn't effective as is hard to understand and connect with the story.

Here is a pie chart of the results I received from my target audience:

Post 26: Annotated Poster

Here is a couple of movie posters of which I have anylised and annotated around to give me ideas of how I could layout and compose my own Short film poster, I have used examples from the films Les Miserables and The Sweeney as they are both Dramas and as I find their posters effective and eye catching which is what I want to portay in my own Film Poster.

Post 25: What Makes A Good Poster

What makes a Good Film poster?

Film posters have a clear commercial purpose, which is to promote a film. When creating a film poster it is essential to consider how well the poster fulfils its purpose advertising the film to the target audience.  The main duty of a film poster is that it has to reach out to the correct audience; this is done by clearly identifying what genre the film is. An effective example of film poster that reaches out to its direct target audience is ‘The Bourne Identity’, as by just looking at the poster you can tell that the film is a crime thriller due to the finger print which is portrayed as criminal activity. This is known as Iconography, which is where recurring symbolic images are closely linked to specific genres, which is what I want to do with my own film poster, so that its easier for my target audience to relate and know what the films about.

Main things to consider when making a Movie Poster:

           • Written Text
• Narrative
• Colour
• LayoutT
• Unique Selling Point
• Images I

Post 24: Posters Specific To My Genre - Drama

Here is a link to IMDB where I found a list of all differnt Drama Films, which I found very helpful in my film poster research as I was able to get ideas about what other drama films had used and how they has composed and what layouts they had created for their film posters.

Here are some examples of Film posters from the genre Drama, of which I am going to use for inspiration and as a guide line to what I should include on my poster and generate Ideas about how I could compose my final design.

Post 23: Poster Research

Above is a link to a Pinertest Board I created and screen shots, with different examples of Movie Posters pinned on. I have used this website as a way to research and gather ideas in one place. I have chosen specific posters with different layouts and compositions to give me a wider understanding and to help influence my own ideas, for my own short film promotional poster, so that it turns out to be as successful and effective as possible.

QR Codes

I have also done some research into QR codes and Have created one to include into my poster design. Here is a link to the website I used.

Above is a screen shot of the QR Website, which shows the specific steps you have to go through to create your own unique QR code. Below is the final outcome that I created on this website. A key aspect of this website is that when I create my poster design I will be able to change and alter the colour of the QR code to fit the design of my poster.
